When Maya Suresh and Suresh Chander decided to build their modern dream home from the ground up, they turned to Cantoni designer Andrea Petor to help bring their vision to life. They first met Andrea when she helped the couple furnish their living room 16 years ago. The chemistry was instant, and they knew they wanted to work with her again.

“Andrea is wonderful to work with,” Maya says. “She understood what we were trying to accomplish. She’s detail oriented and extremely personable and she has a very good sense of design.”

For the new space, both Suresh, who is retired, and Maya, who is the chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, wanted a home that was contemporary and stylish. But comfortable, too. Andrea adds, “Maya needed a space where she could work, but they both wanted their home to be a place where they could enjoy entertaining as well as relaxing.”

For nearly a year, the trio poured over the floor plans, Maya’s inspirational magazine clippings, and Cantoni’s extensive portfolio to find the perfect pieces to fit the family’s sophisticated sensibilities.

Starting in the formal dining area, Andrea achieved the sophisticated look the couple envisioned with luxurious lacquered pieces handcrafted in Italy by Malerba that could also comfortably accommodate guests at their many lavish gatherings. “As part of our Indian heritage, we love to cook and entertain,” Maya says. “When we have friends and family come over, they linger.” Andrea selected a sleek dining table, which is finished in an ebony high-gloss lacquer and extends to seat up to 12 guests. One and Only armchairs, which were tailored to the room in a deluxe ivory leather offer comfortable, sleek seating while the M Place buffet customized in the same ebony high-gloss lacquer stands out against a hand-painted floral pattern chinoiserie wall.

“I really love how it all came together,” Andrea says. “Maya has such an elegant sense of style, and I wanted to make sure that was reflected in their space down to each detail.”

For less ceremonious food affairs, they enjoy the kitchen with its beautiful lake view at an extendable dining table, which is surrounded by warm, espresso brown leather Agatha chairs. “I’m not exaggerating when I say we’ll sit there for a couple hours, lingering over breakfast or brunch,” Maya says.

Throughout the pristine space, curated colors distinguish each room. In the study, Andrea customized the marble Epico Arc desk with a red leather top and paired it with the equally bold red leather Vistoso executive chair. Classic leather and walnut Ease II lounge chairs with ottomans offer modern, cozy seating. An outdoor view is framed by a pair of print drapes, which Maya spotted in Elle Décor and Andrea hunted down. “Everything that we asked for, she went above and beyond in helping us find,” Maya says.

Glass sculptures are plentiful throughout and add a punch of color to each room. The entryway makes a lasting first impression with an entire display of hand-blown pieces on recessed shelving. “I have always loved glass sculptures and colored glass,” Maya says. “It’s a passion of mine.” In the living room, a curvaceous sectional and loveseat, customized in a soft grey upholstery encircle a custom-made coffee table whose base features a dazzling rainbow of stalagmite acrylic shards. The Swing sculpture adds a graceful accent to the space.

A pair of yellow leather Tulip armchairs brightens the elegant, neutral-hued master bedroom, which features furnishings from Malerba's M Place Collection. Handcrafted yellow leather and chrome Red Carpet table lamps rest atop oyster sycamore wood M Place nightstands with a high gloss lacquer finish and embossed crocodile knobs. The pair bookends the taupe leather M Place bed, which faces a custom lacquer entertainment center. To complete the look, Andrea placed the M Place bench at the foot of the bed with the cozy chocolate Le Shag area rug to tie it all together.

Though each room in the house offers beauty and comfort, the meditation room is a special space. Just off the master bedroom, the quiet nook has deep blue walls, a colorful custom love seat, and an ottoman, upholstered in six different fabrics of varying textures and colors. It also offers a serene view of the backyard and lake. Maya and Suresh use the space for prayer and as a private sanctuary to escape and unwind. Still, Maya says, she can’t possibly pick a favorite place in the house. Every room was thoughtfully and carefully planned and each one offers its own retreat.

“Maya had a dream that her home would be elegant, sophisticated and contemporary,” Andrea says. “And I think together we accomplished that beautifully.”

Maya agrees the end result is exactly what they envisioned. “We want to be here,” she says. “We go on vacations, but it’s wonderful to come home and be at home. There’s a sense of peace throughout the house.”

Andrea is wonderful to work with. She understood what we were trying to accomplish. She’s detail oriented and extremely personable and she has a very good sense of design.
