At the top of the winding mountains in Malibu is a meandering 700-foot driveway that leads up to a 4,500 square foot desert oasis. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home is undeniably a work of art owing to the talents of renowned architect Ron Goldman FAIA. Its sheer exterior lends itself to its natural surroundings of dramatic rock formations and layered mountain ranges. And if that’s not enough to entice you, then we’re sure the owner’s collection of impressive automobiles is bound to get your blood pumping.
Featured in numerous television shows and commercials, the Malibu home features an extraordinary solid glass garage built specifically for the owner’s limited edition Porsche Carrera GT. But that’s not the only impressive toy in this car collection. After falling in love with the Eleanor Mustang from Jerry Bruckheimer’s remake of Gone in 60 Seconds, (italicize film) he purchased a 1968 Mustang and invested three years in remodeling the clone to create the hard-driving “Helleanor.”
It is apparent that the owner is the type of individual who dedicates time, attention, and hard work into the things for which he has great passion. When he walked into Cantoni about four years ago and met LA design consultant Bernadette Capellaro, he soon realized she too shared his same drive. Since then, the two have been working together harmoniously designing and furnishing his unique home.
One of the most important factors in furnishing a client’s home is designing it to meet the individual’s personality and lifestyle. It is clear that the owner’s taste in cars is sleek, sexy, and unique and therefore both he and Bernadette wanted to give his home that same look and feel with a strong modern aesthetic. With Bernadette’s design expertise, the two worked closely together to achieve just that. Inspired by the home’s natural features, like the rich stone floors and built-in brick fireplace, Bernadette chose a neutral palette of brown tones with pops of orange to add excitement and a modern flare.
The first room the two tackled was the main living area, which opens into the serene infinity pool and features spectacular, panoramic views of the desert landscape. Bernadette selected from our finest Italian leathers the rich brown Otello sofa paired with the two contrasting Savona chairs. To tie all of the pieces together, Bernadette had the client’s pre-existing built-in sofa reupholstered in caramel brown Italian leather. The owner’s beloved poodles, Carrera and Bentley were the first to approve the renovated leather sofa. We are guessing they liked it, as it is where Bernadette’s sidekick and “design doodle” Jake later joined the two for a play date.
Behind the built-in sofa and living area is a modern and open kitchen space outfitted with custom orange Toto barstools, giving it that sleek, sexy look with just the right amount of pop. Covered in floor to ceiling stone stacked walls, the rustic dining room presents a beautiful space for entertaining. Both Bernadette and her client wanted to maintain its warm ambience while still adding all of the right modern touches. The two agreed upon the Prora black glass dining table along with custom, orange Italian made Lady side chairs.
Although Bernadette explains that there is still more work to be done, she always looks forward to her client’s visits into the LA showroom. Bernadette adds, “He is a great customer and now friend. He always comes into Cantoni in the same way hollering for Jake and playing ball for about ten minutes before we tackle a design project.” The respect definitely seems to be mutual as her client adds, “I have been shopping at Cantoni for years and Bernadette is one of the main reasons why I keep coming back. She really took her time researching just the right pieces of furniture for my project.” It is because of loyal clients and talented designers like Bernadette that Cantoni has earned the reputation as the best store of its kind in the country.
