An Idyllic Texas Lake House

CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN FURNISHINGS AND NATIVE TEXAS MATERIALS LIVE IN HARMONY ALONG THE SHORES OF CEDAR CREEK LAKE.

While many homeowners turn to designers and architects when lacking vision, Dallas residents Randy and Mena Whaley were just the opposite—they knew exactly what they wanted for their new home along the shores of Cedar Creek Lake. “Our goal was to create a timeless getaway that captured inside and outside living as one,” Randy says. What they needed help with: orchestrating their concept.

The couple sought out Heath-based Mabry Custom Homes to build the “contemporary, serene” structure they imagined. For the interiors and finish out, there was no question who they would turn to. They had entrusted Cantoni when building before and teamed up with designer Nicole George, who had assisted them in previous builds. Working in tandem, Nicole and the Whaley’s started in the family room, where they wanted to emphasize the view and socializing. Furnishings include a custom-ordered Edwin sectional and ottoman, along with the Sting accent tables to frame the room.

The formal dining room boasts the Skorpio Keramik dining table in a matte golden Calacatta ceramic top and graphite lacquered-steel base paired with Sofia side chairs in smoke-hued leather. And moving into the master bedroom, a duo of mocha leather Harley swivel chairs are handsome alongside the Milo accent table in charcoal-stained ash.

The couple’s favorite space, however, is the kitchen. The piece de resistance of the space is a dramatic drop-down ceiling tiled with large, reflective white porcelain sheets suspended some 20 feet below the formal ceiling. To complement the kitchen motif and provide even lighting, the Dallas Design team hung shimmering glass and chrome fixtures to illuminate the waterfall white-quartz-topped island below.

But perhaps the most beautiful element is the Aster Cucine cabinetry, an easy decision for Randy and Mena, whose primary goal for their kitchen was for it to have a sleek, elegant aesthetic that reads museum-quality throughout. The cabinetry, all painstakingly handcrafted by the Italian maker’s team, “creates a stunning effect of simplicity,” Randy says.

Together, Nicole, the rest of the Dallas design team and Randy created a home that the Whaley’s will treasure for years to come. “Nicole and the Dallas Design team made things easy,” Randy says, pointing out that they were “terrific throughout the entire design phase, adding tremendous insights and value across all aspects of the home and kitchen design.”
